Complete Rose Care Guide: Keep Your Blooms Fresh Longer
March 31, 2026
Roses are hardy, but they do benefit from care. Here's the complete guide to keeping your Australian roses looking beautiful for weeks.
Before your roses even touch a vase, prepare them properly. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle under running water—this maximizes the surface area for water absorption. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line; submerged foliage decays and introduces bacteria.
Choose the right vase. You want something tall enough to support the stems upright, but not so large that roses lean against the edges. A vase that's 1.5 times the height of the stems is ideal. Fill it with room-temperature or slightly cool water—cold water can shock the stems.
Now, maintenance. Change the water every 2-3 days. When you do, recut the stems, even just a quarter inch. Remove any wilting or browning petals from the outside of the bloom. Don't be shy—removing the outer layers reveals fresh petals inside.
Position your roses in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and ripening fruit. The cooler they are, the longer they'll last. A spot out of direct sun, with temperatures around 18-20°C, is perfect.
Add flower food if you have it. The sugars feed the blooms; the biocide kills bacteria. But clean water changed regularly is more important than fancy additives.
With these practices, fresh Australian roses will last 2-3 weeks easily. They'll open slowly, revealing new petals day after day. That's what a proper rose is supposed to do.
